If you are traveling by car, you may not need a passport but you do need proof of both identity and citizenship. A valid U.S. passport, passport card, or NEXUS card satisfies these requirements for U.S. citizens. According to American entry into Canada by land you may also use an Enhanced driver's license to enter Canadaif you come from a state that issues them. When returning to the U.S. by land or sea Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative indicates: U.S. citizens can present a valid: U.S. Passport; Passport Card; Enhanced Drivers License; Trusted Traveler Program card (NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST); U.S. Military identification card when traveling on official orders; U.S. Merchant Mariner document when traveling in conjunction with official maritime business; or Form I-872 American Indian Card, or (when available) Enhanced Tribal Card.
