In Canada, can a Canadian Permanent Resident enter and exit Canada?

When I had a PR card, I was told to always leave it in my passport. My passport was issued from my country of origin (Singapore), and I used that when I traveled. I was under the impression that your passport is what allows you to travel, not the PR card. I think that travel visas are also dependent on your nationality/ place of issue of your passport, not your PR card. The PR card is necessary when you come back to Canada, so they know you are still legal to live and work here and are not a tourist.
