Can I apply for a Canadian passport for my child, who is eight months?
A prerequisite for getting a Canadian passport is that the person is a Canadian citizen, so the first question is whether your child is already a Canadian citizen. Since your child was born abroad eight months ago, i.e. after 2009, they are only a Canadian citizen at birth if you (or the other parent) was a Canadian citizen otherwise than by descent. In other words, if you were born outside Canada and was a Canadian citizen at birth, you cannot pass Canadian citizenship to your child born abroad; but if you were born in Canada, or naturalized in Canada, you can pass Canadian citizenship to your child born abroad. If your child was a Canadian citizen at birth, you would first apply for a Certificate of Canadian Citizenship for the child, and once you get that, you can apply for a Canadian passport for the child. If your child is not a Canadian citizen, because you were unable to pass Canadian citizenship onto them at birth, your child can still gain Canadian citizenship if you petition for them to immigrate to Canada (i.e. become a Canadian permanent resident) as the child of a Canadian citizen, and then apply for their naturalization once they enter Canada (there is no period of time a minor permanent resident needs to have spent in Canada before the citizen parent can apply for Canadian naturalization for the child).
