What happens to the passports and other documents of asylum seekers?

When they apply for refugee status, the government holds the documents. They are returned when the person is granted Permanent Residency. If the refugee application is refused, the documents are returned and the person exits Canada within a few days. When you are a permanent resident, you have all the rights of a Canadian citizen excepting voting, holding office. But you are free to travel.
