Is there a way I can drive into Canada from the US without a US?
If you live in Vermont, New York, Michigan or Washington, you can get an enhanced drivers license (or enhanced ID for non-drivers who are at least 16). This will allow you to enter Canada and return to the USA by land or sea. Children under 16 accompanying them need raised-seal birth certificates. You can also get a U.S. Passport card that serves the same function as an enhanced ID you would need an accompanying drivers license to drive into Canada. If you have a U. S. or Canadian passport, you can join Nexus, a biometric ID system which allows you to enter Canada (or the USA) by land, sea or air and return to the USA (or Canada) and leave your passport at home. In Niagara Falls, there are so many daily commuters that an entire bridge the Whirlpool Bridge is dedicated to Nexus users. There are Nexus lanes at many other high-volume border crossings. American permanent residents should carry their passport and their green card ID to enter Canada and return to the USA by land or sea. Everyone else residing in America with no ties to Canada must carry a passport. In some cases, they must also have a visa.
