If you were born in, say, Syria, but you have been living in Canada for 8+ years since a toddler and have a Canadian passport, are you a citizen of Canada or Syria? None of your parents were from Canada. A person born in Syria of Syrian parents is probably a Syrian citizen. I could be wrong there as I have no knowledge of Syrian citizenship laws but that would make sense to me. However, if you have a Canadian passport, you are a Canadian citizen. Only Canadian citizens can get a Canadian passport. This along with voting and running for office are a few of the differences between a person with Canadian Permanent Residency and a Canadian citizen. So the answer is definitely Canadian and probably both Canadian and Syrian.
