Yes, but you can also drive into Canada with just a regular drivers license with a picture on it and a birth certificate. Canada never mandated passports for overland travel from the US.(for American citizens) The US requires that you have some form of RFID (radio-frequency identification) thats machine-readable to reenter the US. This means either an Enhanced DL or Passport or Passport Card. If you dont happen to have one of these you may face delays getting back into the US.
