Can I get into Canada from the USA with a drivers license but no?
If you are crossing at a land border on foot or in a private vehicle and you are a US citizen, strictly speaking you can enter Canada with just a drivers licence and a verbal citizenship declaration so long as the CBSA officer believes you. However, to return back to the United States, you need a WHTI (Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative) compliant document: U.S. citizens and nationals: U.S. passport Passport card State enhanced driver's license (available in Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont and Washington) approved by the Secretary of Homeland Security Trusted traveler program card (Global Entry, NEXUS, FAST, or SENTRI) A valid Merchant Mariner Document when traveling in conjunction with official maritime business A valid U.S. military identification card when traveling on official orders So, in practice, CBSA will require land border crossing US citizens to have WHTI compliant documentation not necessarily because Canada requires it, but because the United States requires it so that the traveler can return to the United States. If you are traveling by common carrier (bus, airline, etc.) then a passport book (not card) will be required by the carrier before boarding. This will be a transportation company requirement; you wont get on without it.
